Managing Shareholder of The Fowler Law Firm PC, Laura Fowler recently attended the Hill Country Community Ministries' (HCCM) Star Struck Gala and was left inspired by the thoughfulness the organization gives to how dollars raised are spent (she also got to dance with a cow!).
As a self-professed Gala-holic, Laura often sees charitable organizations spend extravagantly to host events in outrageously expensive venues with more emphasis on paying consultants to manage and market galas, create costly printed materials, and retain gigantic administrative staffs.
HCCM's focus is very obviously on ensuring its funds are utilized first and foremost on helping people in the community who need it most. The organization is identifying those who don't meet the traditional definition of poverty, but who are trying to support a family, working nonstop often at several jobs - single parents trying to support both elderly parents and minor children, living at the edge of their income. Many of these families are just one life crisis away from economic distress. A critical illness, car wreck or ER visit, or the sudden death of a family member can wipe out any chance of the family sustaining even basic needs.
