One of the things that makes giving so great is being connected to new and interesting organizations. This often happens when one group we are working with makes an introduction to another wonderful organization. One such connection made recently was when our partner, Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts, an organization that was formed to meet the legal and accounting needs of artists and arts nonprofits, introduced Fowler Family Foundation to Penfold Theatre Company.

Penfold has served the north Austin metro area for 14 years by telling intimate stories of hope and empathy. The company is reemerging from the pandemic with a particular focus on reimagining and launching new initiatives. This includes a five-year New Play Commission Series, a new Great Plays in Great Places Series, and an Arts Leadership Apprenticeship in partnership with Texas State University. The hope is that these new programs will have an increased impact on Central Texas by investing in artists and creating community and dialogue around their work.

The company will present a world premiere this week called A War of the Worlds written by local playwright Jarrett King. Using the work of H.G. Wells and Orson Welles, this is the first in a series of new play commissions. Combining careful historical research and savvy creative license, King connects Welles’ Depression Era world with our own – touching on a wide range of topics including race relations, fake news, the ethics of media technologies, and “invasion” to name a few – while simultaneously enthralling with the sci-fi thriller that became an instant cultural icon.

A War of the Worlds marks the inaugural work in Penfold’s new play commissioning series which challenges five local playwrights to engage a different “classic” story to create an original work that models Penfold’s values of empathy and hope. Penfold will produce their world premieres, one per year, over the next five seasons. A War of the Worlds is on stage at Ground Floor Theatre through June 18th. More information and tickets can be found on their website.
